Become a Pool Lifeguard

Pool Lifeguarding is a fun, flexible and dynamic job for people in all parts of Australia. For a lot of people, it is also their point of entry for a career in the aquatics industry leading to a range of employment opportunities within the industry.

Pool Lifeguards often take on a much greater responsibility than simply supervising water space. As well as identifying potential risk factors and taking steps to reduce those risks, lifeguards act as positive role models in an effort to build strong people, strong families and strong communities within the aquatic industry.

What skills/training do I need for employment?

  • Step 1: RLSSA Bronze Medallion
  • Step 2: First Aid Certificate
  • Step 3: RLSSA Pool Lifeguard

Royal Lifesaving Australia offers all three (3) of these qualifications together in a training package, ‘Lifeguard Skill Set.’

What does a Lifeguard do?

Although challenging, pool lifeguarding is also a very rewarding profession. Lifeguards core focus is to:

  • Ensure the ongoing safety of those under their care
  • Prevent accidents/injury
  • Save lives through the application of emergency response skills

What is involved in the Lifeguard training?

The RLSSA Pool Lifeguard Certificate Course is world renowned and recognised throughout Australia as well as many other countries around the world. 

The course is delivered through a combination of theory and practical training and education, at the end of the training course you will be able to: 

  • Provide first aid and emergency care 
  • Administer oxygen in an emergency 
  • Perform basic and advanced water rescues 
  • Supervise pool users 

Lifeguard accreditation is valid for 12 months only and must be renewed each year.

Become a Learn to Swim Instructor

What You Need To Become A Qualified Learn to Swim Teacher:

1. AUSTSWIM Qualified

AUSTSWIM is Australia's national organization for the swimming of swimming & water safety.

The AUSTSWIM licence is the industry standard for swimming and water safety teachers. AUSTSWIM courses are delivered and recognised in each state and territory of Australia and many countries overseas.

Shoalhaven Swim & Fitness Centres have AUSTSWIM endorsed swim schools, which means that all instructors must have a minimum qualification of AUSTSWIM teacher of Swimming & Water Safety to be employed. AUSTSWIM offer a number of extension courses which allows suitably accredited staff to teach specific groups within the program.

2. First Aid /CPR Accredited

Royal Life Saving is a nationally recognised training provider for First Aid & CPR packages - They also offer Pool Lifeguard & Bronze Medallion Training and being a foundation member of AUSTSWIM is also a proud supplier of AUSTSWIM training programs. 

Royal Lifesaving Australia is focused on reducing drowning and promoting healthy, active and skilled communities through innovative, reliable, evidence-based advocacy; strong and effective partnerships and quality programs, products and services. Royal Lifesaving Australia offer First Aid Training courses nationally throughout Australia.
